a guide to buying bedding

A Guide to Buying Bedding | Kayla's Five Things

This post about buying bedding is sponsored by Hollander and Live Comfortably. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’m sure young professionals around the world have faced similar issues when it comes to picking out the proper bedding. I really never knew what to look for and the first real bedding I looked into were for our wedding registry.

Hubs and I scoured the rows of bedding stuff and tried to figure recall whether a high or low thread count was better and we thought long and hard about how thick our mattress pad should be. In the end, we just sort of went with whatever looked good and had the median price point. I’m not sure that was the best approach…

Now that I have had the pleasure to partner with Live Comfortably and we have gotten to try out new pillows, a new comforter and a new mattress pad, we can totally feel the difference from what we had before. Sleep is really important for me as a “business owner” and just as like a functioning adult. I didn’t realize how dramatically luxury bedding can affect that and make every night so much more relaxing and better for getting sleep.

In order to help you guys avoid our mistake and spend money on quality bedding, I’m going to give you a few resources as well as qualities to look for and base your decision on for your pillows, comforters and mattress pads.

Pillows:

Shop the options at Live Comfortably here.

  • Find the right size for your bed
  • Make sure they meet your allergy needs
  • Replace pillows based on its filling
  • The higher the “fill power” the more support they provide and the more durable they are
  • Find the right pillow for the way you sleep- back, side, stomach

Comforter/Duvet Cover:

Shop the options at Live Comfortably here.

  • The lighter the comforter= the cooler *
  • The thicker the fill= the warmer
  • Make sure it’s machine washable
  • Make sure they meet your allergy needs
  • Duvet cover goes inside the cover, usually sold separately

Mattress Pad:

Shop the options at Live Comfortably here.

  • Make sure they meet your allergy needs
  • Different fills can affect the temperature and/or distribute the heat differently
  • Denser the pad= more firm it feels
  • Look into mattress pads with a heater if you prefer a warm bed
  • A waterproof option protects your mattress
  • There are three main types of mattress pads and toppers

Last, but not least, thread count is still confusing for me, but here’s how HGTV.com sums it up:

  • It refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch
  • Higher the thread count= softer the sheet
  • Higher the thread count= more likely to fair well over time
  • Good range: 200- 800 thread count
  • Always look at its finishing, because that could make a big difference
