NYC is great for a lot of things, but there almost as many things that make you question why you moved here in the first place. One of these questions is when did an 10 square feet become a luxury?! The answer: when you’re trying to create an a home office in an apartment.
We found the perfect little sliver of our home and carved it out to add not just additional (much-needed) storage, but also a place for me to work from home (aka what I do for about 30-40 hours a week). For me, it was also just an aesthetic necessity, because on the other side of our fake fireplace are white, leaning shelves… might as well match it!
I’m a very creative person, so I’ve jumped from hobby to hobby over the years. I’ve learned to cross stitch, fell in love with making friendship bracelets, dabbled in hand lettering (still do) and can do some shaky calligraphy. All of these are hobbies that I either still do to relax on weekends or that I hope to pick up again in the future. These shelves and the little mason jar pencil holder house the tools I need to get artsy at a moment’s notice.
Besides art supplies, this desk now holds some extra coffee table books (spot the one that is not mine below), notebooks and planners that we had no place for. It even houses our mini stationary collection and all our important files (birth certificates, bank information, etc.). It’s really a great space for us- yes, hubby is welcome to it, though he prefers in front of the Xbox.
If you need a card or extra gift, you better sign up for the newsletter. That’s where you can find all the good stuff (including a brand new Valentine’s Day printable)!
It might just be the novelty of the desk, but I really have felt more productive and focused since we got it. Before, I was always halfway to horizontal on the couch trying not to fall asleep. Now I’m comfortable (this West Elm chair is pure gold) but still fully upright. I’m excited to see what creative things come from this little corner of our home and hope that my shopping list and images inspire you to create your own work space. Even if it’s just a dressed up TV table with a mood board taped to the wall… create the environment you need to flourish.
